A beach lovers’ guide to Brazil

Brazil is renowned for the most spectacular carnival in the world, its remarkable football exports and, of course, miles of golden sands. This tropical paradise invites sunseekers to unwind on quiet coves and busier hotspots, with something for every type of traveler.

Whether you want a secluded spot to work on your tan, or to join beautiful people at play, you’ll find many beaches on this vast coast to take your fancy. 

First stop is the iconic Rio de Janeiro, where the crescent-shaped Praia de Copacabana is alive with people. As one of the most famous beaches in the world, it’s an ideal place for people watching. 

Grab a refreshing drink from one of the hawkers and see if you can spot any famous faces on the boardwalk. If you’re feeling energetic, join a game of beach volleyball or football on the sand.

Surf’s up at Arpoador beach, nestled between the fort of Copacabana and Ipanema. Rent a board and catch some waves or simply watch those who ride. This beach is well-lit at night so it’s great for a refreshing dip after you’ve witnessed a magnificent sunset and snapped those all-important Insta stories.

Drop anchor in Buzios to discover a rustic paradise and laid back vibes. There are 23 beaches in the area, so you’re spoilt for choice but some stand out more than others. Seek out the warmest waters in the region at Tartaruga, which is famous for weddings. The calm sea is ideal for snorkelling and baby turtles are frequently spotted near the beach. Look out for fabulous starfish, too!

Azeda beach is a treat for those who find it, situated at the end of a cobblestone lane and framed by lush vegetation. Take a water taxi to gaze at its coastal charm from the sea or even rent a kayak to explore the cove.

While in Buzios, take the opportunity to enjoy the lip-smackingly good fresh shrimp and lobster, served from many local kiosks that run along the beaches.

When you arrive at Ilhabela, the volcanic island six kilometres off the coast off Sao Paulo, you’ll be struck by its extraordinary beauty. Almost the entire island is covered by Atlantic Rainforest, so it is home to more wildlife than people.

The beaches on the west side of Brazil are the easiest to reach, and it’s rare that the waters get choppy so it’s ideal for families. Head out further to the north or east to see truly beautiful and remote beaches where you might have the place to yourself.

Praia de Curral is a fun spot that is easily accessible and a hive of activity during the island’s many festivals. The forest provides areas of shade from the hot sun, and you can rent a canoe, kayak or paddleboard to take out on the water.

Bonete Beach draws adventurers – it takes a 4.5 hour hike through the jungle or a boat ride to reach it, but the view is its own reward. This remote stretch appears like the exotic setting for a movie, with waves crashing towards the shore. Bonete regularly ranks among Brazil’s top beaches, so it’s worth the effort to visit.

There are over 2,000 beaches in Brazil, and more than 30 in Rio alone, so young and old beach lovers are spoiled for choice. Just don’t forget your sunscreen!
