Planning a European break this festive season? Here are the top Christmas markets the experts say are worth the trip.
The festive season is upon us, and there is nothing quite like a European Christmas. Cobblestoned towns and city squares transform into winter wonderlands, each offering its own distinctive mix of tradition, culture, and festive allure. Think iconic Christmas markets, piping hot mulled wine, twinkling lights and delicious sweet treats.
A river cruise is an ideal way to explore these beautiful cities, so TUI River Cruises’ designated Christmas Market Expert, Scott Lindsay, has shared his tips for selecting the best Christmas markets to visit in 2025 and beyond. From France’s fairytale villages to Germany’s grand cathedral backdrops, we are going where the experts are!
Located off the edge of Strasbourg, the small town of Colmar is famously known for being the inspiration behind Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ animated film. Lindsay says the market includes “illuminated canals and fully decorated medieval buildings,” calling it a “ hidden gem not to miss!”
Tipple-loving travellers should try the unique French white mulled wine, Vin Chaud, which is filled with an array of spices from clove and cinnamon to star anise – a delicious alternative to the traditional mulled wine.
Complete with its own Singing Christmas Tree, ‘Christkindelsmarik’, is one of Europe’s oldest and most iconic Christmas markets. It is set against the backdrop of Strasbourg Cathedral, where cobbled streets overflow with the scents of mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and spiced biscuits.
During the festive season, local choirs fill the air with French and German Christmas carols, performing from platforms tucked among the trees. Their voices celebrate the rich Alsatian heritage, transforming the tree into a living concert stage that delights and captivates passersby.
This Christmas market is one of Germany’s most renowned, set against the city’s iconic Gothic cathedral. The main event is the ‘Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom’, boasting a stunningly beautiful sky of fairy lights which shimmer above the cathedral.
For those looking for a lesser-known Christmas market, expert Lindsay recommends Cologne’s Harbour Christmas Market, which sells maritime-themed memorabilia and fresh festive fish to eat. Other quieter alternatives include Markt der Engel or Market of Angels Christmas Market in Neumarkt. This festive market is filled with real-life golden angels who walk freely around, complete with a few spots to sip traditional warm mulled wine.
For those wanting a broader European festive break, the Market of Nations is a must-visit. This festive market is held in the German wine and brandy-making town of Rüdesheim. Lindsay says, “This Christmas Market of Nations is known for selling over 20 different countries’ local cuisines across six continents from Hungarian Lángos to Spanish Paella.”
Those who enjoy a festive beverage will love Rüdesheim Coffee, a traditional hot drink made with locally distilled brandy, topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of chocolate.
