The Arc de Triomphe in the French capital was inaugurated in 1836 by King Louis-Philippe, who dedicated it to the armies of the Revolution and the Empire. The architect, Jean-François Chalgrin, had been inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus but took the dimensions of the French structure to impressive dimensions. The arch is roughly 50 m high, 45 m long and 22 m wide. The top of the tower is excellent for views of Paris.
