What to pack for a river cruise – a season-by-season guide

River cruises offer an immersive journey into the heart of a variety of destinations, and, depending on where you sail, experiences can range from cycling through the hillsides of Europe or wine-tasting sessions in Portugal, to exploring the pyramids of Egypt and kayaking through the Amazon jungle. Many modern river cruise boats now also have state-of-the-art facilities, including pickleball courts and expansive spas, so you want to make sure that you do not miss a thing by forgetting to pack something! 

Whether you’re sailing through the tulip fields of the Netherlands in spring, basking in the sun along the Rhine in summer, admiring the golden vineyards of the Douro in autumn, or sipping hot chocolate at Germany’s twinkling Christmas markets, making sure you’ve packed for the occasion is essential. That’s why we’ve put together the ultimate river cruise packing list, broken down for each season.

While many ocean cruise lines still uphold certain dress codes and guidelines, on the whole, river cruises are a bit more casual – adding to their beautifully relaxing atmosphere. 

When it comes to dining, many people tend to wear what they wore on the day’s excursions – i.e. jeans and a shirt or a skirt and a t-shirt. Excursions are central to river cruises and it’s likely you will do at least one per day, so comfortable clothes and shoes that you can explore freely in are a must.

That’s not to say people don’t dress up. On European river cruises in particular, many guests will tend to wear a smart shirt or dress with a more formal-style jacket. It also depends on which cruise line you’re sailing with. For example, on affordable river cruise lines such as TUI or VIVA Cruises,  guests dress a bit more casually, whereas high-end lines like UniWorld or Riverside Luxury Cruises invite more formal attire in the evenings. 

No river cruise line will ever expect you to pack a suit or a floor-length gown. So if you’re looking at an empty suitcase and racking your brains for the answer to ‘what do I need to take on a river cruise?’ a key thing to consider is, save space on formal clothing as you won’t need much, if any!

Spring is a beautiful time for river cruising, as landscapes come into bloom and temperatures begin to warm up. However, weather at this time of year can be pretty changeable, so layering is key to comfort.

Clothing:

Summer is one of the most popular times for river cruises, with balmy, warm days and long evenings bathed in golden light. Keeping cool and safe in the sun is essential to enjoyment. 

Clothing:

• Clothing in breathable, lightweight fabrics i.e. linen and cotton
• Shorts, skirts, t-shirts, vest tops and sundresses
• Swimming costume  (even if your riverboat does not have a pool, opportunities for swimming in ports may arise, and there will likely be sun loungers on the deck )
• A light cardigan, jacket or shawl for air-conditioned areas and breezy evenings 
• Sandals and comfortable walking shoes
• A couple of smart-casual outfits for evening dinners 

Accessories:

• Insect repellent for outdoor activities

• A lightweight rain jacket if a shower occurs

Autumn river cruises promise spectacular scenery with burnished leaves and clement temperatures. However, as with spring river cruises, temperatures can be unpredictable, so it’s good to have plenty of layers. 

Clothing:

• A warm jacket for chilly evenings
• Comfortable trousers such as jeans, chinos, sports leggings or cargo trousers
• Scarves, gloves, and a hat for cooler destinations

Christmas market river cruises are magical, particularly when complemented by light dustings of snow, but they are definitely chilly, so packing your winter woolies is a priority. Prepare for busy crowds, too!
