Fancy staying at the southernmost hotel on Earth and steering clear of waters famous for inducing seasickness when you tick off your bucket list trip to Antarctica? There’s a hot – or should that be cold? – new property on the scene.
Silversea has revealed the name and first details of its new luxury hotel in Puerto Williams, Chile – the southernmost hotel on Earth – due to open in time for the 2025/2026 Antarctica season.
Named The Cormorant at 55 South, the 150-room property will serve as an exclusive pre-cruise base for guests heading to the White Continent, offering a simple and stylish start to their polar adventure.
“The Cormorant at 55 South is a tribute to the rich culture, breathtaking natural beauty and storied history of Puerto Williams,” said Bert Hernandez, president of Silversea. “Every aspect is thoughtfully designed to immerse our guests in the destination while ensuring a uniquely Silversea experience.”
New Silversea Antarctica hotel The Cormorant takes its name from the indigenous Yahgan word for the aquatic bird – Lakutaia – long considered a symbol of seafarers and good fortune. Sitting at 55° South, the hotel’s name also nods to its extreme latitude and its role as a new frontier in expedition cruising.
Guests can expect expansive rooms with either forest or Beagle Channel views, framed by wide windows that draw in the wild Patagonian landscape. Interiors feature warm wood finishes, earthy tones and handcrafted pieces by local artisans to reflect and celebrate regional culture.
The property’s dedicated team, trained in ‘The Silversea Way’, will ensure the same high standard of hospitality the line is known for at sea.
The Cormorant is more than just a hotel – it’s a key part of Silversea’s streamlined Antarctica experience. Guests can bypass the infamous Drake Passage with the brand’s Antarctica Bridge fly-cruise programme, flying directly to King George Island to board their ship – spending less time travelling and more time exploring.
Silversea was the first luxury cruise line to operate expeditions in Antarctica, launching in 2008. Today, the brand continues to lead the way with expert-led landings, Zodiac cruises and on-board lectures delivered by a team of up to 28 polar pros – from marine biologists to glaciologists.
Whether it’s spotting penguins ashore or kayaking past icebergs, guests will get up close with Antarctica’s raw, remote beauty before returning to a ship – and soon, a hotel – that offers all the comfort of home.
