New cruise line unveils intimate & accessible Antarctica cruises on former Mail ship

New expedition line Terra Nova launches Antarctica cruises from December 2026 with small groups, longer landings and adventure activities included.

There’s a new name in polar travel: Terra Nova Expeditions will launch Antarctic voyages aboard the legendary RMS St Helena from December 2026. The British-built former Royal Mail Ship has been refitted for modern expedition service and chartered long-term by Terra Nova for a programme that puts time ashore, hands-on exploration and value front and centre.

If you’re new to cruising, this is the kind of operation that makes the White Continent feel doable, as Terra Nova’s charter brings RMS St Helena back to blue-water duty with upgraded guest areas while keeping her working-ship soul intact.

What is Terra Nova Expeditions?

Terra Nova is a new expedition operator that promises fewer passengers, more time on land and a responsible approach. The headline move is a long-term charter of RMS St Helena – the 112-passenger classic that’s been upgraded and tailored to a more budget-conscious style of expedition. It’s got green credentials, too: expect carbon-offset voyages and citizen-science projects on every departure.

Terra Nova Antarctica cruises

Terra Nova plans to introduce day sailing in Antarctica using a second vessel, Icebird – a global first – so a handful of guests can feel the hush of true sailing among ice in a way never offered before. This will give small groups faster, easier access and the chance to experience short sailing trips among the ice. This means less waiting, more time ashore and an extra layer of adventure.

What to expect onboard RMS St Helena

RMS St Helena was built in the UK to serve one of the world’s most remote islands, then retired in 2018 before a major conversion for the Extreme E race series. That refit added efficiency gains, hybrid-ready systems and onboard emissions monitoring. Under Terra Nova she returns with revamped cabins and public spaces and a plan to start Antarctica sailings in the 2026/27 season. First departures are slated for December 2026 with limited capacity.

This is a purposeful platform rather than a floating hotel; the ship keeps her deep-sea hull and long-range endurance yet boasts comfort where it counts. Terra Nova will cap numbers so fewer than 100 guests go ashore at any one time which shortens waits and lengthens zodiac time while aligning with IAATO guidance. The smaller scale also helps unlock sub-Antarctic itineraries to places like South Georgia and the Falklands when conditions allow.

Plus, if seasickness is your worry, Terra Nova is fitting motion-reduction measures and a world-first See-LEVEL VR system designed to ease symptoms within minutes. The aim is simple – help more people actually enjoy the crossing rather than endure it which could be a deciding factor for first-timers.

Included activities on Terra Nova Antarctica cruises

Your fare covers the doing not just the viewing – no surprise add-ons. Guided hikes, zodiac cruises, kayaking and snowshoeing are baked in, with drinks at select meals, Wi-Fi, onboard yoga and gratuities included too. Landings are capped at fewer than 100 people so groups stay small and unhurried. On select departures up to 30 guests can even camp on the ice for a night under the Milky Way.

Snowshoe to viewpoints regular boots can’t reach, paddle past brash ice and curious seals, thread zodiacs between blue-veined bergs, then hike to rookeries with time to linger – all included.

Price and value for money on Terra Nova cruises

Terra Nova pitches itself as inclusive and accessible rather than ultra-luxury. Entry pricing starts from $8,790 which is sharp for a loaded Antarctica programme that bakes in activities and key onboard extras. If you’re price-sensitive but want a genuine small-ship feel this is the sort of operation that brings Antarctica within reach.

Who runs Terra Nova Expeditions?

The company is led by Greg Carter, co-founder of Chimu Adventures, with Beth Mercier – formerly global head of sales at Quark Expeditions – as chief commercial officer. The wider team draws from across the polar sector and the mission emphasises access, accountability and low-impact travel on small ships. In short it reads like a seasoned crew rather than a start-up learning on your time.

How to plan and when to book Terra Nova Antarctica cruises

Capacity is intentionally intimate and the first voyages are in the southern summer of 2026/27. If Terra Nova Antarctica cruises are on your radar you’ll want to move early for the most distinctive dates and activity-enabled departures. This looks like substance over spectacle – more time on the ice, fewer people around you, and an expedition feel.
