The ultimate packing guide: What to wear on a Caribbean cruise

With this quick guide, you’ll know exactly what to bring and wear on your Caribbean cruise.

Packing for a Caribbean cruise should feel exciting, not overwhelming. With warm weather, beautiful islands, colourful ports and plenty of time spent outdoors, it’s worth planning ahead, so you know exactly what clothes to wear.

Whether you’re travelling at the height of peak season (December – April) or wondering what to wear on a Caribbean cruise at night, this guide will help you feel prepared from the moment you step onboard.

What to wear on a Caribbean cruise?

When deciding what to wear on a cruise to the Caribbean, think light and breathable. Daytime temperatures are warm year-round, so cotton, linen and other airy fabrics work best.

Most guests opt for easy outfits like shorts and vest tops, loose sundresses, swimwear with a stylish cover-up and flat sandals that are easy to slip on and off. A sun hat and UV-protected sunglasses are essential, and a light bag for sunscreen and water will make walking around the ship on sea days or in port much more comfortable.

What to wear at night on a Caribbean cruise?

Evenings on a Caribbean cruise are typically smart-casual, though dress codes vary by cruise line. Ladies often choose sundresses, linen trousers with a nice top, or a breezy maxi dress. Men tend to wear chinos or tailored shorts with a polo or short-sleeve shirt. If you’re unsure what clothes to wear on a Caribbean cruise at dinner, think resort chic – comfortable, polished and perfect for warm evenings on deck. Just keep in mind that dress expectations can vary by cruise line, and plenty of people choose to stay pretty casual, especially on more laid-back ships!

Many cruise lines also include formal evenings as part of their itineraries, giving you the chance to dress up and enjoy a touch of glamour at sea. Most cruise lines suggest cocktail dresses or full-length gowns for women, while men typically opt for tuxedos, tailored suits, or a smart jacket and tie. We’d recommend checking out your cruise line’s FAQs for details on whether you can expect a formal evening or not.

What to wear on a winter Caribbean cruise?

Many travellers book winter sailings to escape chilly weather back home. Fortunately, temperatures in the Caribbean stay warm year-round, with the dry season running from December to April.

Pack lightweight clothing, breathable fabrics, swimsuits and cover-ups for days by the pool or beach. Don’t forget sun protection: the dry season in the Caribbean has strong UV rays that can sometimes be deceiving, so hats, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen are essential!

What to wear on excursions in the Caribbean?

Your outfits will depend on what shore excursions you do in port. For beach days, a comfortable swimsuit, sunhat and airy cover-up will take you from the ship to the sand with ease. If you plan to snorkel, bringing a UV-protective swim top is a great idea for both comfort and sun protection.

Exploring towns calls for breathable clothing and comfortable sandals, while adventure activities like hiking or zip-lining require trainers and quick-dry fabrics.

“Packing swimwear and the perfect accessories for sun, sea and sand is, of course, a must and don’t forget to pack your vibrant Caribbean colours,” says Elan Mottley Harris, UK Director, Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc.

For those visiting Barbados, Elan adds, “Wearing camouflage is a no-no in Barbados, so be sure to leave any cool camo pieces on the ship.”
