P&O Cruises dress code: The complete guide

The cruise is your runway! Here’s all you need to know when it comes to dressing for P&O Cruises.

A holiday is the perfect place to dress up and show off your trendiest get-ups, extravagant ensembles, and perhaps more experimental outfits you haven’t had the chance (or nerve) to wear yet. It’s also a time to chill out and wear your comfiest ‘fits – but in order to feel fully comfortable, you want to make sure you’re wearing the right thing! Nothing is more awkward than feeling you’re dressed wrong for the occasion. Queue flashbacks of arriving at school on home clothes day, dressed in your uniform. Ah, the joys.

While many cruise lines have relaxed their dress codes over the years, P&O Cruises included, most still have guidelines to adhere to. This is not as scary as it sounds – it’s mostly what you’d expect, (i.e. don’t saunter into the buffet in your swimming trunks) however it’s good to be clear on exactly what’s what. Here’s the down-low on P&O Cruises’ dress code to avoid any fashion faux pas on your next holiday.

Is there a P&O Cruises dress code?

While it’s true that gone are the days of cruise ships being Titanic-level formal, most cruise lines still have dress codes and P&O Cruises is no exception. This can be broken down into a daytime dress code, the ‘Evening Casual’ dress code, and the ‘Formal Nights’ dress code.

Let’s take a look at what each of these involves.

1.Daytime dress code on P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises’ dress code during the day is essentially your typical holiday wardrobe. Think t-shirts, shorts, casual dresses – in short, whatever you fancy! Of course, do use your own discretion depending on your cruise itinerary. If sailing through Scandinavia in the winter, you might find a sundress a little on the breezy side…

When you’re not by pool, shoes are a must and it’s a no to swimwear in any of the ship’s public areas. This includes lounges, inside bars, restaurants or the reception.

As of 2018, P&O Cruises banned all fancy dress/costume dress. Novelty clothing with printed images or slogans is also not permitted, as is any clothing featuring inappropriate language or illustrations.

The only time that costumes are permitted is during themed nights, e.g. 1960s night, 80s pop night, or at seasonal celebrations such as Halloween.

It’s worth noting that dressing up for themed evenings is not mandatory, so if fancy dress is not your thing then don’t panic!

2.P&O Cruises ‘Evening Casual’ dress code

Smart casual dress is perfect for P&O Cruises’ ‘Evening Casual’ wear. According to the cruise line itself: “casual separates or dresses for ladies and open-neck polo shirts and casual trousers for men” are a good guideline.

The main thing to remember is that tracksuits should definitely be left in your cabin, as should light or ripped denim and football shirts. If you can bear to part with your trainers this is a good idea too, but in reality, if you have a pair of smart, dark trainers these will be fine – just no bright whites.

3.P&O Cruises ‘Formal Nights’ dress code

This is your opportunity to really dress to the nines in glam evening wear and feel every bit the classy cruiser.

‘Formal Nights’ are sometimes referred to as ‘Celebration Nights’ or ‘Black Tie’ nights, but the dress code for each is always the same. Cocktail dresses, ball gowns, tuxedos, dinner jackets and dark business suits with ties are all perfect for the occasion. If you have formal national dress or a dashing military uniform, this is also the time to get them out.

There’s usually at least one Formal Night per week-long cruise, and if your itinerary is between 10-14 nights, there’ll be between two and four Formal Nights. As a general rule, P&O Cruises older ships have slightly more frequent Formal Nights, whereas newer ships like Iona and Arvia have fewer.

And if the thought of wearing a bow tie or ball gown makes you break out in a hot sweat then don’t worry as these evenings are not compulsory. Simply check out which venues are allowing ‘Evening Wear’ on the daily events programme, Horizon.  These usually include:

The Buffet
The Beach House
6th Street Diner
The Olive Grove
Keel & Cow
The Glass House

Top tip – no shorts. Even in the less dressy venues on Formal Nights, shorts are a no-go.

Does the P&O Cruises dress code apply to children?

For children aged 17 or under, they do not have to follow the Formal Nights dress code on P&O Cruises. However, that’s not to say they can’t dress to impress if they feel like it! Children are encouraged to wear Evening Casual dress on formal occasions if possible, and avoid denim.

What happens if you don’t follow the dress code on P&O cruise ships?

If you forget your flip flops when nipping into the bar after a dip in the pool, or get the date wrong for a black tie night and accidentally arrive in your jeans, a member of crew will gently remind you of the policy/evening’s dress code and politely ask you to adjust your clothing accordingly. No biggie.

If you wear novelty clothing with printed images or slogans, or anything that could be deemed inappropriate, this is strictly prohibited. P&O Cruises states in their policy that they reserve the right to deny embarkation to guests who are inappropriately dressed in this manner.

So, if you’re wondering “how strict is the P&O dress code”, the answer is that it’s generally considered to be a little stricter than other major cruise lines. The main thing to remember is to avoid fancy dress and any clothing with inappropriate images/language at all times to avoid any sticky situations.

Is there a dress code for shore excursions?

With so much to explore in each port destination, it’s a good idea to get your walking shoes on. Flat shoes like trainers or boots tend to be best for longer walks, active excursions, and around historic cities. It goes without saying, stilettos and cobblestones don’t mix well…

There’s no dress code to follow for shore excursions as such when on a P&O cruise, but clothing that’s comfortable, allows you to be active, and is warm/cool enough depending on the destination is sensible. The last thing you want is to be held back from discovering each destination because of a fashion faux pas!

It’s also important to remember that some sites and attractions require you to cover up for cultural or religious regions. A member of the P&O Cruises shore programming team will be able to advise you if you have any questions.

Hello 👋 I am the newest addition to the Sailawaze writing team. I've always loved travel since as far back as I can remember and am lucky enough to have travelled to some pretty extraordinary places! As a massive animal lover, I think safaris are among my favourite travel memories – there's just nothing like being up close to a beautiful creature like a leopard or elephant! Cruising opens up so many doors when it comes to exploring destinations, as you can visit numerous places in one go, and reach areas you wouldn't be able to by plane or train! I would really like to take a Mediterranean cruise around the little Greek islands and get stuck in with all of the cuisine and culture there.
