Virgin Voyages review: Inside Valiant Lady's Caribbean party cruise

Sailawaze tried out the party scene on an adults-only cruise around the Caribbean, where winter is bright red rather than blue…

“Will you be sunbathing topless tomorrow?” the man from Dallas I’ve known for 10 minutes asks me. He hands over a drink from his mini-bar. His wife’s lacy lingerie is strewn across their suite sofa, and I briefly wonder whether accepting a suite tour with the pair was a faux pas. I flush (appropriately for Virgin Voyages’ signature colour) bright red.

It turns out, however, that the (mainly) American passengers onboard Valiant Lady are simply… no-holds-barred friendly. This is just one of the open conversations that strike up during my five-night cruise around the Caribbean. “What we like the most about Virgin,” one couple tells me in the hot tub, “is that you can do whatever the f**k you want.” (And there really is a dedicated spot onboard for freeing the nipple.)

For many, this seems to be because they’ve ditched their kids for the tropical getaway (Virgin is strictly 18+) and are reclaiming their let-your-hair-down youth. Indeed youth is very much in touching distance here: most people I see appear to be between 30 and 50, and energy levels are hip-shakingly high. Everybody is keen to make friends and make merry – and I am, no pun intended, very much onboard.

This short cruise out of Miami is considered Virgin Voyage’s most party-intense itinerary. It starts with the Champagne-fuelled, poolside sail away party, when everyone shows off their figures, dance moves and matching holiday t-shirts to pumping music…and doesn’t stop.

Every night on my sailing, Virgin’s proper nightclub venue The Manor [below, left and centre] fills up for a full-on fiesta where fancy dress and fancy free are the order of the evening. At a costume party I see Mrs Claus drop into the splits at the centre of a dance-off, a merman snogging a nurse, and a pirate girl dishing out fake tattoos to newfound friends. Not to mention the (surprisingly sexy) Dalmatians, utterly convincing Darth Vader, and inflatable penis surrounded by, erm, sperm sidekicks – all dancing before the resident DJ like Kate Winslet at the Titanic’s below-deck bash.

At the Virgin-traditional Scarlet Night party, everyone turns up in red and heads to the pool, where tunes boom and a giant inflatable octopus with illuminated eyes looms over the proceedings. I’ve never seen a cruise ship party like it as everyone boogies, boozes and bonds.

The social media-famous highlight sees cruisers jump into the pool fully-clothed, and several do – leaping into the water with abandon, mascara running down their cheeks – while others shimmy, ankle-deep in the shallows. It’s so hot jiving under the Caribbean stars I welcome the refreshing paddle, and sing myself hoarse as my friend and I throw our arms around, disco lights flashing above us, like the swaying seaweed far beneath the ship.

The best bit? Getting “home” is heel-relievingly easy – a mere elevator ride away. We even stop off at the 24/7 breakfast joint [above, right] en route to hoover up a plate of hash browns and bacon. No desperately sourcing a substandard, overpriced chippy here. Painting the town, well, red has never been so easy.

Not that the party has to stop at the restaurant door – Korean BBQ eatery Gunbae [below, left] is pre-drinks masked by skewered meat. From outside, I hear chaotic chants of, “Gunbae, Gunbae, Gunbae!” and am baffled. Inside – as we’re sat with six other diners – it becomes gin-clear: a drinking game is your amuse-bouche at this hangout.

For solo cruisers, Gunbae seems to be a great spot to make (ship)mates – socialising is essential for enjoying the night. I start the evening weary but the enthusiasm is infectious once the game gets going, and we’re soon cheering and downing shots of sake like college roommates.

Ashore? Yup, more partying. There are only two ports of call on this itinerary, one of which is to Virgin’s Bahamian private resort, Bimini Beach Club. I head out [above, right and centre] after a lie-in, by which time the pool party is in full swing, complete with a DJ, bright inflatables and crimson-clad Virgin crew busting a move beneath the palms.

However, make your way down to the soft, sandy beach, and a calmer atmosphere awaits. There are lines of sun loungers and the warm water is shallow enough to stand in with a cocktail, catching up on the gossip from last night’s blowout – Valiant Lady docked in the distance like a watchful parent. If you stay later into the afternoon, the pool even empties out as everyone heads back to the ship, so this is the time to get your lengths in, undisturbed by carousers and stray lilos.

In fact, while parties are omnipresent on this holiday, it is always possible to escape them if you’re not in the mood. The vessel boasts countless areas to take a chill pill in away from beats and beer, not to mention a plethora of activities, from stargazing, dodgeball and line dancing to bungee classes, scavenger hunts and breath work sessions.

By the final evening it’s snoozy over boogie for me. Instead, we opt for a trivia night, a spin around the arcade games, then dinner at steakhouse, The Wake. I devour an exceptional roasted bone marrow on an oil-rich toasted brioche overlooking the ship’s churning trail: dark blues and foaming whites pluming out like Poseidon’s very own lager tap. And then bed; this sailor is ready for shore leave – until next time.
