Top 10 food destinations for a river cruise in Europe – no.1 will surprise you!

Hungry for your next adventure? These are the top 10 river cruise destinations in Europe for food lovers.

If there’s one thing that gets cruise travellers excited – aside from waking up to a new city every morning – it’s food. And on a river cruise, Europe’s best flavours are often just steps from your cabin door.

Unlike ocean ships that dock outside major cities, river cruise vessels moor right in the heart of town. That means you can wander straight off the ship and into local cafés, markets, bakeries and bistros – perfect for globetrotters who like to eat their way through every destination.

To reveal the best foodie stops, travel agency Iglu Cruise analysed Tripadvisor ratings across 40 of Europe’s most popular river cruise ports. They worked out the percentage of food venues – including restaurants, cafés, bars, pubs and markets – rated “very good” or “excellent” (four or five stars).

The result? A delicious ranking of the top 10 river cruise food destinations in Europe.

1.

Belgrade, Serbia

Topping the list is Belgrade, where 63.4 percent of food venues earned top marks. Docked where the Danube meets the Sava, the Serbian capital boasts 21 Michelin-recognised restaurants.

Langouste, a Michelin-starred fine-dining spot in the Old Town, is one of the standouts, with a menu crafted by chef Marko Deric. But you don’t have to go high-end: sample classics like Ćevapi (grilled minced meat), Burek (cheese or meat-filled pastry) and Ajvar (roasted red pepper relish) at Kalenić Pijaca, Belgrade’s biggest open-air market.

Cruisers can also stroll to landmarks like the Belgrade Fortress and the Victor Monument straight from the port.

2.

Arles, France

Second place goes to Arles, in sun-soaked Provence, where 62.5 percent of eateries score highly. This Rhône-side town is famous for rustic regional fare like gardianne de taureau (bull stew), saucisson d’Arles and the Arles tart.

Don’t miss L’Oustau de Baumanière – a three-Michelin-starred restaurant where chef Glenn Viel serves artistic Mediterranean plates. He became France’s youngest three-star chef in 2020.

It’s not just about the food either. Arles is also home to a UNESCO-listed Roman amphitheatre just 30 minutes on foot from your ship.

3.

Budapest, Hungary

Hungary’s capital is a heavyweight when it comes to flavour. Budapest has more than 4,000 food venues, and 61.1 percent of them are rated “very good” or “excellent”.

Favourites include lángos (deep-fried flatbread), chimney cake and hearty goulash, but there’s also fine dining galore, such as the two-Michelin-starred Stand, where chefs Szabina Szullo and Tamas Szell reinvent Hungarian staples.

Landmarks like the Hungarian Parliament Building are just a stroll from the ship, making this city a feast for the eyes and stomach.

4.

Basel, Switzerland

Basel on the Rhine isn’t just about chocolate and fondue – though those are here in spades. With 60.3 percent of food venues scoring top reviews, this Swiss city on the France-Germany border is a surprise culinary hotspot.

Local dishes include Basler Läckerli (spiced honey biscuits), Fastenwähe (caraway pastry) and flour soup. If you’re splashing out, Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl is a must – three Michelin stars and one of the world’s top restaurants.

The art scene is just as rich. Basel has over 40 museums and hosts the famous Art Basel fair.

5.

Bratislava, Slovakia

Affordable and varied, Bratislava is Slovakia’s answer to gourmet on a budget. More than half the city’s food venues (56.3 percent) hit the four or five-star mark.

Dig into dumplings with sheep’s cheese (bryndzové halušky), sauerkraut soup, fried cheese and hearty pub food—all washed down with local beer.

The castle looms over the old town and river, offering one of the Danube’s most scenic settings.

6.

Avignon, France

Back in Provence, Avignon is bursting with flavour. With 55.8 percent of food venues scoring top marks, it’s a haven for market-goers and cheese lovers.

Pick up tomatoes, garlic, tapenade and Herbes de Provence at Les Halles d’Avignon or tuck into ratatouille, fougasse and aïoli. The medieval Palace of the Popes is just 15 minutes from the port, and you’ll glide past the famous Pont d’Avignon as you cruise the Rhône.

7.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna’s got 1,700 acres of vineyards, a legendary dessert scene and 54.9 percent of restaurants hitting the top spot on Tripadvisor.

Feast on Wiener Schnitzel, apple strudel and Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake), or try hearty classics at a Würstelstand (sausage stand). Pair it with local wine at a Heurigen tavern.

Palaces, classical music and imperial grandeur complete the experience.

8.

Lyon, France

Lyon – the so-called food capital of France – lands in eighth place with 52.2 percent of venues rated highly. It’s the birthplace of bouchons, traditional bistros serving dishes like pike quenelles, cured sausage and herby cheese spreads.

Explore the famed Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse for tastings of charcuterie, seafood and pastries. Dock at the meeting point of the Rhône and Saône and step into one of Europe’s tastiest cities.

9.

Bordeaux, France

Home to 6,000 wineries, Bordeaux earns its “Wine Capital of the World” title. River cruisers can explore La Cité du Vin museum, enjoy local tastings or visit historic chateaux.

Dishes include Arcachon oysters, asparagus and canelés (caramelised pastries). For a special night out, Gordon Ramsay’s two-Michelin-starred Le Pressoir d’Argent serves foie gras, caviar and more, paired with hundreds of wines.

10.

Passau, Germany

Rounding out the top 10 is the Bavarian city of Passau, where the Danube meets the Inn and Ilz rivers. Expect Bavarian staples like pork knuckle, bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad and cheese spreads. Try the Michelin-starred Johanns for modern twists on forest fare.

You’ll also find grilled river fish on sticks (Steckerlfisch) and goulash served riverside.
