Cruising has always promised glamour with sweeping staircases and sparkling soirées, and in return, it quietly demands an appearance to match. Whether that means a salon refresh or a results-driven medi-spa session, today’s cruise ships are more than ready to oblige.

Cruise lines provide an impressive suite of cosmetic and aesthetic treatments. In the last few years, cruise ships have elevated their beauty offerings, the luxury cruise lines in particular, competing fiercely to out-do each other to have the newest and the best treatments and equipment onboard.

Teeth whitening, lipstick bars and personalised beauty at sea

How about teeth whitening and a lipstick bar? Holland America Line has expanded its personalised beauty services at sea. Guests can brighten their smiles in a single, onboard session. As for lips, the line has launched a new Blend Bar [below], the first lipstick-blending studio at sea. This unique and immersive concept invites guests to design their own customised lipstick or gloss with the help of onboard beauty consultants.

With over 30 premium pigments, four finishes, and over 20 flavours, guests can recreate a discontinued favourite, match a formal-night outfit, or craft a completely original shade. All products are vegan, cruelty-free, and free from parabens, sulphates, phthalates, and GMOs, with antioxidant-rich pigments and SPF built in. Teeth and lips sorted!

Men’s grooming and tattoos onboard cruise ships

Virgin Voyages turns the focus on men with Stubble & Groom [below, right], a men’s barber shop designed with a sleek, mid-century feel, complete with porthole ocean views. It offers an upscale grooming experience offering services such as precision haircuts, beard trims, hot-lather shaves, and even specialised men’s spa services, creating a relaxed, pampering space to refresh their look while at sea.

The line also offers Squid Ink [below, left], the first full-service tattoo studio at sea. Operated by professional resident and guest artists, the studio offers tattoos, piercings and permanent makeup. It brings a modern, edgy twist to cruising, giving guests the chance to book an onboard consultation and walk away from their voyage with a one-of-a-kind piece of personal art!

Injectables and medi-spa treatments at sea

For ironing out those unwanted wrinkles, Silversea’s extensive aesthetic menu at sea features injectables such as Botox, Dysport and dermal fillers (typically Restylane formulations), alongside skin-tightening technologies like Thermage on select ships.

Its advanced anti-aging facials bridge that gap between a spa and a clinic, often incorporating lifting, firming or resurfacing techniques for results that feel more medical than a traditional spa.

The timeless elegance of Cunard brings images of pearls, white gloves and cocktails served in crystal. Cunard’s signature services fall under their Mareel Wellness & Beauty brand [below, left], which includes treatments using British skincare brand, Elemis.

The advanced Elemis Biotec Facials use six Biotec 2.0 technologies, including oxygen and red light, to lift, smooth, and define the skin. There’s also the Elemis Pro-Radiance Superfood Facial, a nutritional boost that promises to energise and detoxify dull complexions.

Lash lifts and Shellac manicures ensure guests are head-to-toe gala-ready, while those looking beyond the mirror can book a total body composition analysis and nutritional consultation as a longer-term health investment.

Body contouring and cellulite treatments on cruise ships

Need muscle tone? Norwegian Cruise Line’s Mandara Spa & Salon offers body-contouring and skin-toning services which includes the Ionithermie Cellulite Reduction Treatment, designed to visibly tone the skin. During the treatment, a marine-based clay or algae mask is applied to the skin, after which electrodes deliver gentle electrical stimulation to promote muscle stimulation, improve circulation and encourage absorption of the active ingredients.

MSC Cruises feature the LPG Endermologie body treatment and other anti-cellulite treatments such as lymphatic drainage. Makeup lessons, aftercare guidance and lectures on healthy eating help guests maintain results long after the gangway comes up.

Is cosmetic cruising worth it?

Beauty at sea is riding the waves resulting in a floating beauty scene which now rivals many land-based high-end clinics, with the added bonus of ocean views. Whether your goal is red-carpet-ready glamour or a complete skin reboot, there’s a ship and a treatment menu and package to suit you. Add-ons such as makeup lessons, and hair styling consultations neatly complete the transformation.

In a world of fast-paced lifestyles, many guests board feeling frazzled, some may say “a wreck”. Cruises offer that me-time to disembark looking like a well-rested, well-polished version of oneself. Fresh-faced, wrinkle-smoothed, sporting a new coiffure, a flattering lip colour and perhaps a little extra muscle tone….
