I’m a wellness expert & I tested these cruise wellness retreats

From detox menus and meditation to spa rituals and fitness plans, I tested cruise wellness retreat cruises with Crystal, Cunard and Explora Journeys to see if they really work.

A detox surrounded by buttery croissants and comfort food winking from nearby counters, stargazing meditations on the top deck, a personal trainer to put you through your paces and seminars to whet your wellness appetite…

Cruise lines are now embracing the wellness wave, launching dedicated retreats with carefully curated programmes to help you tune into the rhythm of the sea.

What to expect from a cruise wellness retreat

Breathe in, breathe out. I synchronised my breathing throughout Crystal cruise line’s first wellness retreat at the end of 2024 (Crystal’s next Wellness at Sea cruise sails 17–24 August 2026 from Vancouver to San Diego), sailing 3,971 nautical miles from Barcelona to Accra on the elegant Crystal Symphony. Fourteen days of classes, workshops, lectures and port excursions steeped in wellness, buoyed by fresh sea air and doses of sunshine.

A fitness expert unpacked the dumbbells and resistance bands for strength work and balance, somewhat challenging on a moving ship. A yoga and meditation specialist led sessions to boost energy and mobility, alongside trigger therapy (ouch – painful in places) and mindful gratitude walks around the deck to bring about that sense of presence.

I discovered more stretching techniques than I thought possible, from dynamic and ballistic to static and isometric, many of which have since crept into my daily routine. Posture correction and injury prevention rounded out the programme.

On shore, marrying with destinations along the way, wellness flowed into the excursions: e-biking in Gibraltar, a Hammam ritual in Tangiers, a medicinal plant walk in Las Palmas.

Nutrition talks, detox menus and fasting onboard

What really is in our food? Why am I always tired? Nutritionist Dr Christine Houghton tackled these questions head-on during her lectures, urging us to read labels, spot harmful additives and recognise marketing tricks.

She explained nutrigenomics, reframing how personal nutrition should be approached. When, what and why we eat became questions to properly digest, to avoid unnatural hunger and weight fluctuations. I left the seminars wondering whether I should eat again at all.

The three-day Body Detox was no small feat on an all-inclusive cruise. Dedicated menus delivered dishes such as baked mango tamarind cauliflower with cilantro mint chutney, vegan fettuccine alfredo and even a surprisingly good Pimm’s jelly cup.

Dinners featured root vegetable bisque, butternut squash risotto and baked coconut rice pudding with blueberry compote. Intermittent fasting involved sixteen-hour fasts, skipping breakfast and opting for gentler classes to appreciate the impact of a body reset.

Guests also took part in a workshop to build a strategic personal wellbeing plan to continue at home. Naturally, the Aurōra Spa played its part with sauna, steam room and relaxation spaces. Odyssey Art at Sea added a creative outlet for mindfulness and self-expression, gently engaging the parasympathetic nervous system to support rest and repair.

Spa spaces and creative wellbeing onboard

More recently I sailed on Cunard’s Queen Anne to sample wellness à la carte, much of it centred around The Mareel Spa. Acupuncture released stubborn knots, a bamboo massage rolled away tension and a technology-driven facial, I chose to believe, softened a few wrinkles.

The Body Composition Analysis offered a detailed breakdown of fat, muscle and hydration, identifying health risks and tracking fitness progress. The outcome was a new exercise regime focused on building muscle, supported by a nutritional consultation recommending more protein and frequent healthy snacking.

Personalised health checks and onboard treatments

I scheduled this early in the voyage to integrate these elements into my time on board. In addition, I learnt to make my own face mask treatment during an aloe vera workshop using all-natural products during an excursion in Fuerteventura.

Cunard also offers holistic wellness journeys in partnership with Harper’s Bazaar, blending health, beauty and inner peace across selected sailings. The Relax Journey focuses on meditation, acupuncture and restorative treatments.

The Energise Journey boosts vitality through massage, personal training and bamboo therapy, while the Recover Journey restores the body with reflexology, anti-inflammatory leg treatments and smoothies. I opted for a pick and mix approach to enjoy and benefit from a little of everything.

Themed wellness journeys and workshops

Elsewhere, Explora Journeys has introduced a series of one-day, expert-led retreats on Atlantic crossings, designed to tempt first-timers with immersive experiences in movement, mindfulness and holistic wellness.

Forget the tired image of towering buffets and languid days at sea. Wellness cruising is now in vogue with ships offering structured fitness classes, mindfulness sessions, spa treatments, and menus designed to support health and vitality. Expert-led programmes and purpose-built spaces have turned cruises into serious wellbeing escapes rather than novelties.

Are wellness retreat cruises worth it?

From sunrise Tai Chi on deck to restorative spa therapies, every element is designed to help reset, recharge, and reconnect. Wellness cruising is where luxury meets wellbeing, mixing indulgence with results-driven programming that rivals land-based retreats.
