AmaWaterways makes history with two luxury river ships, AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia, sailing Colombia’s Magdalena River on immersive seven-night cruises between Cartagena and Barranquilla.
AmaWaterways has officially launched not one but two pioneering river ships on Colombia’s Magdalena River, marking a historic moment for both the cruise line and South American river tourism.
Earlier this year, AmaWaterways debuted AmaMagdalena, the first-ever major luxury river cruise ship to sail Colombia’s longest river. Just months later, on October 26, 2025, the line celebrated another milestone with the launch of AmaMelodia, its second ship to join the fleet on the Magdalena.
Together, the two vessels represent a new era for river cruising in South America – combining sustainable tourism, authentic cultural exchange and five-star comfort.
“After seeing the incredible response to AmaMagdalena earlier this year, we are thrilled to welcome AmaMelodia to the AmaWaterways fleet,” said Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways. “Launching these two ships has been an extraordinary collaboration with our Colombian partners. Together, we are not only creating unforgettable travel experiences for our guests but also helping to build a sustainable foundation for tourism that benefits local communities along the river.”
Carrying just 60 and 64 guests respectively, AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia were custom-designed in collaboration with Colombian craftspeople to showcase the natural beauty, music, and artistry of the region.
AmaMagdalena set the standard earlier in 2025 with handcrafted woodwork, a twin-balcony design, regionally inspired Latin American cuisine, and a sun deck pool. AmaMelodia continues that legacy with spacious staterooms ranging from 237 to 318 sq ft, a Sun Deck whirlpool, locally inspired menus, and lively entertainment in the Main Lounge.
“Seeing AmaMelodia set sail is very meaningful to me,” said Kristin Karst, Co-Founder and Chief Brand Ambassador of AmaWaterways. “From its talented artisans to the warm communities along the riverbanks, Colombia’s spirit is woven into every detail of this ship. AmaMelodia is a celebration of that culture and a beautiful example of what can be achieved through true collaboration and respect for local heritage.”
Both ships operate two seven-night itineraries – Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia – sailing between Cartagena and Barranquilla. Each cruise is designed to reveal the soul of the Magdalena River through music, cuisine, history, and wildlife encounters.
Cultural highlights include:
A private celebration of the world-famous Barranquilla Carnival
A guided heritage tour and exclusive jazz performance in Mompox, a UNESCO World Heritage city
Birdwatching of rare endemic species
A visit to Palenque, the first free town in the Americas
These immersive experiences not only enrich travellers’ understanding of Colombia but also support local artisans, musicians, and guides, creating meaningful connections and community benefits.
Prices for AmaWaterways’ Wonders of Colombia itinerary start from £4,255 per person (including a £375pp saving) for the seven-night cruise from Cartagena to Barranquilla, departing 11 October 2025 in a French Balcony stateroom.
Fares include return flights and overseas transfers, fine dining onboard (plus a special dinner on shore in El Banco), wine and beer during lunch and dinner, daily sip and sail cocktails, and small-group excursions.
With both AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia now sailing, AmaWaterways continues to lead the way in responsible and luxurious exploration of Colombia’s river heartlands. The brand’s expansion into Colombia has been supported by ProColombia, the country’s official tourism agency, which has helped coordinate local partnerships and training programmes.
“The Magdalena River is a symbol of national identity and a hub for sustainable development,” said Carmen Caballero, president of ProColombia. “Seeing how river tourism connects travellers with our traditions, landscapes, and communities reflects the responsible, inclusive, and transformative tourism we want to promote.”
