Royal Caribbean welcomes new cruise ship Icon of the Seas into the fleet

Icon of the Seas – the latest cruise ship titan from Royal Caribbean – has finally been welcomed into the line’s fleet ahead of sailing in January 2024.

Royal Caribbean International has welcomed the long-awaited arrival of cruise ship Icon of the Seas – a culmination of more than seven years of anticipation and 900 days of design and construction involving thousands of experts.

This grand addition to the Royal Caribbean family was celebrated [below, left] at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland, marking a historic moment, attended by 1,200-plus crew members and workers plus Royal Caribbean leaders.

Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group said: “Today, we are celebrating more than a new ship; it’s also the celebration of the culmination of more than 50 years of innovation and dreaming at Royal Caribbean to create the ultimate vacation experience.”

He added: “The memories millions of families and vacationers will make on Icon will be our greatest accomplishment yet.”

Noteworthy milestones included the installation of the AquaDome, the largest glass and steel structure ever placed on a cruise ship, and the creation of extensive water amenities, featuring seven pools and six record-breaking waterslides.

Icon of the Seas is now set to journey from Turku to Cadiz, Spain, where final enhancements await before its ultimate destination in Miami.

Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International commented: “Seven years ago, we had an ambitious idea to create the first vacation truly made for every type of family and adventurer; now, it’s in our hands, and in this final stretch, we’ll bring it all to life for the biggest debut in our history in January 2024.”
