Galveston cruise port guide: What to see, do & eat in Texas’ leading cruise hub

Galveston, in Texas, USA sits on a barrier island about an hour south of Houston. Its compact downtown, seaside promenades and relaxed island vibe make it a great place to explore before or after your Caribbean cruise.

The cruise terminal itself is within walking distance of shops, restaurants and the historic Strand District, Galveston’s downtown area, meaning you can soak up some culture and coastal air before you even board your cruise.

Galveston also has a fancy new terminal, now home to Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises. The Texas hub is the first-ever homeport operation for MSC Seascape, which will embark on year-round seven-night Western Caribbean sailings.

In 2027, Royal Caribbean is expanding its Texas presence as Icon of the Seas will join Liberty of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas, sailing a variety of Caribbean itineraries from the Royal Caribbean terminal. Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Sunshine will also homeport in Galveston for its 2027/28 season.

How to get into town from Galveston cruise port

Wondering how far downtown Galveston is from the cruise port? The good news is, not far at all. The port’s three main terminals sit right on Harborside Drive, and the heart of the Strand Historic District is just a 10-minute walk away.

You can easily reach downtown on foot or hop in a short taxi or rideshare if you’ve got luggage. If you’re staying overnight, many local hotels offer cruise-and-park packages with shuttles to the terminal.

Those flying in will likely arrive via Houston Hobby Airport (45 minutes) or George Bush Intercontinental (1–1.5 hours). Numerous shuttle companies and private transfers operate between Houston and the island.

Parking is plentiful around the port, both open-air and covered, and many lots include complimentary shuttles to the terminals.

In short, getting from Galveston cruise port to the town centre couldn’t be easier; everything is close, connected, and perfectly walkable.

Stroll The Strand

Just across from the port, The Strand Historic District is Galveston’s beating heart – a cluster of 19th-century buildings filled with quirky boutiques, art galleries and seafood restaurants. The whole area buzzes with cruise-day energy, and you can easily spend a couple of hours here.

Hit the beach

A 10-minute drive south brings you to Seawall Boulevard, an endless ribbon of sand and sea stretching more than 10 miles along the Gulf. Stewart Beach is family-friendly and well-equipped, while East Beach is known for its live music and events. Rent a chair, take a dip, or just stroll along the promenade with an ice-cream in hand.

Pleasure Pier

Built on an old 1940s pier, Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier is pure nostalgic fun, a small amusement park jutting out into the ocean with roller coasters, carnival rides, and fried seafood stands.

Moody Gardens & Aquarium

A short drive from the port, Moody Gardens is Galveston’s star attraction. Its trio of glass pyramids houses an aquarium, a rainforest, and science exhibits, plus a small beach and paddlewheel boat.

The Bryan Museum & Bishop’s Palace

Galveston is packed with history. The Bryan Museum tells the story of Texas through art and artefacts, while Bishop’s Palace (a Victorian mansion on Broadway Avenue) is a Gilded Age masterpiece open for tours.

Right near the cruise port, you can board a small boat for a 45-minute dolphin-watching cruise around the harbour – a fun and easy outing if you’ve only got an hour or two before setting sail.

The Tree Sculptures

After Hurricane Ike (2008) felled hundreds of trees, Galveston artists transformed the stumps into whimsical sculptures, everything from mermaids to angels. You’ll find them tucked in front yards and gardens around the East End Historic District.

Right across from the cruise terminal, the Galveston Railroad Museum is an unexpected gem with vintage locomotives, rail cars and even a recreated 1930s passenger station.
