Famed the world over for its stunning fjords and waterfalls, dramatic scenery, and the incredible northern lights, Norway is known as the land of the Midnight Sun.
With one of the most rugged coastlines in the world, beautiful landscape and magical skies, it has been the backdrop for movies including the most recent Bond film No Time To Die, as well as blockbusters Tenet, Dune and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
But while Norway may be a feast for the eyes, it’s certainly not on the world culinary map, dishing up polarising delicacies such as Smalahove – sheep’s head, Rømmegrøt – sour cream porridge – and dried lamb ribs known as Pinnekjøtt.
That might all be about to change with the arrival of a duo who are a foodie’s delight. The Hairy Bikers are about to cook up a storm on a trip to Norway where they’ll be cooking some of their favourite recipes, answering all of your culinary questions, and signing copies of their new cookbook, The Hairy Bikers’ British Classics.
The UK’s most popular cookery writing duo Si King and Dave Myers are fans of Norway, having toured the country’s west coast as part of their epic 5,000-mile European journey for the BBC’s Hairy Bikers Bakeation. They will share their love of the scenery and local ingredients with private cooking demonstrations.
‘We discovered the wonders of Norway for the first time while we were filming Bakeation in 2012, when we cooked on a ship going down one of the fjords,’ Si said. ‘It was one of the most beautiful places we’d ever been to. The food and people are amazing and Dave is longing to get back to his Viking roots!’
As well as toasting the TV chefs at a cocktail party, you’ll make your way along Norway’s incredible coastline, discovering the natural beauty of Eidfjord and Hardangerfjord, visiting Molde and spending a day sailing the spectacular Geirangersfjord, past 2,600ft-high cliffs and towering waterfalls. You’ll also visit the UNESCO-listed port of Bergen, known locally as the city of seven mountains. The funicular in the city centre takes just eight minutes to get to the top of Fløyen, with spectacular views over Bergen and the surrounding landscape.
The culinary adventure ends as it began – in the exciting city of Amsterdam. The Dutch capital is charming and small enough to explore on foot or by cycle – perfect for a tour with the Hairy Bikers.
As a magazine and website editor, Karen has been lucky enough to travel the world but is happiest on the water. She loves the Mediterranean and the Middle East and married an Italian in Rome and lived in Dubai for five years. Italy is her favourite country, but says stand out work trips involved doing karaoke and meeting a geisha in Japan and cuddling a koala and collecting pearls in Australia. Karen is passionate about cruising and even has her own cruise blog Cruise Blondes that she created with a former colleague and friend Rebecca Barnes. Her next cruise is to Croatia followed by a voyage to the Norwegian fjords.
