Ambassador themed cruise: Itinerary

This German Christmas Markets Ambassador cruise from the UK calls first at Hamburg [above] in Germany, as Ambience sails the River Elbe, and then Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

You know you’ll be in good festive hands in the former – the Christmas tree originated in Germany. Hamburg boasts top-notch Christmas markets – more than 30! – including the historic market at the Rathaus (Santa Claus regularly makes an appearance here) and the vibrant Winter Pride market. There’s even a Dog Christmas Market!

Visitors can stroll through beautifully decorated stalls adorned with twinkling lights, and find an array of handicrafts, Christmas decorations and delicious food and drink. Expect ice-skating rinks, live music, carol singing, cultural performance, fairground rides and more, all infused with the aroma of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine.

If you fancy a break from the Christmas markets on this pick of Ambassador’s themed cruises, take a stroll along the picturesque Alster Lake, which transforms into a winter wonderland – and even an ice rink if it freezes, visit cultural attractions such as the Elbphilharmonie concert hall and explore the Speicherstadt district with its beautiful, illuminated warehouses.

Warm up in cosy cafes and restaurants, savouring delicious local cuisine, and end your day by attending a captivating performance at one of the city’s renowned theatres. Ambience doesn’t depart Hamburg until just before midnight, so you’ll have plenty of time here to make the most of the German city.

Next up, after a day at sea, comes Amsterdam [above], where a plethora of world-class museums awaits – ideal if you’re looking to escape the cold outside! The Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum or the Anne Frank House are just some of the cultural highlights here. Or why not visit some of Amsterdam’s other indoor attractions, such as the NEMO Science Museum and Heineken Experience?

Ice skating is also a popular activity here in the winter if you’re looking for a more interactive adventure. Head to one of the outdoor ice rinks, such as Ice*Amsterdam in Museumplein or Jaap Edenbaan for a fun experience.

To admire the city to the max consider taking a canal cruise from where you can appreciate Amsterdam’s enchanting architecture – but be sure to indulge in some traditional Dutch treats to warm yourself up! Try oliebollen (deep-fried dough balls), poffertjes (mini pancakes) or erwtensoep (pea soup) from street vendors or local cafes. Warm glühwein (mulled wine) is a must-try too!
