D-Day cruises

Ambassador Cruise Line has two D-Day 80th Anniversary Voyage sailings in 2024, one six nights long and one 13 nights long so there’s bound to be one that fits your schedule in this latest Ambassador sale launch.

Travellers can reflect on the importance of D-Day, an operation that turned the tide of WWII and marked the beginning of the end of the war, as they cruise Britain’s coastline as well as further afield.

Round Britain D-Day 80th Anniversary Voyage

This longer of the two D-Day cruises begins in Portsmouth which has great historical significance; the British port was the main departure point for military and naval units as they ventured forth to Sword Beach in Normandy in 1944.

Just like those brave troops, Ambassador guests will sail towards the French beaches and anchor just off them before visiting the charming fishing town of Honfleur.

Check out the Vieux Bassin (the old harbour of the city) and Sainte Catherine Church (the largest wooden church in France) and be sure to wander around Honfleur’s charming cobblestone streets, stopping to fuel up on such local specialities as moules marinières (mussels in white wine) or fish soup.

Your Ambassador cruise ship will go on to call at a number of important British islands, including the Isles of Scilly. Here you’ll stop at St. Mary’s where highlights comprise Star Castle, Peninnis Lighthouse and a beautiful coastline, perfect for hiking as well as watersports.

Other stops include the Isle of Anglesey in Wales, and the Orkney Isles (the largest town here, Kirkwall, is brimming with Viking history) off Scotland’s north coast, as well as Ireland’s Cobh for vibrant Cork.

Highlights in the Irish city include the covered food market The English Market, the prison-turned-museum Cork City Gaol and, perhaps more unusually, the Cork Butter Museum. Be sure to enjoy a pint of Guinness in a local pub too!

D-Day 80th Anniversary Voyage

This shorter D-Day Ambassador cruise begins in Guernsey’s St. Peter Port and sails to Le Havre, a UNESCO-listed city in Normandy that was almost completely rebuilt after the Second World War when it was extensively bombed. Don’t miss The Perret district famous for its post-World War II architecture.

During your time in the French port also consider calling at the MuMa (Musée d’art moderne André Malraux) – a museum dedicated to modern art, with a large collection of Impressionist works – and Maison de l’Armateur, an 18th-century shipowner’s house that’s been restored and turned into a museum. Le Havre’s long sandy beach is also perfect for a leisurely walk.

There will be ample opportunity to learn all about the history of the region and reflect on the significance of an operation as your Ambassador ship anchors off the Normandy Beaches.

Gems of the Caribbean Sea

Prepare to block out your calendar, this 39-night transatlantic cruise is the ultimate Caribbean exploration.

For nature’s bounty, go snorkelling or diving – Bermuda is surrounded by beautiful coral reefs and shipwrecks that are perfect for marine exploration.

You’ll then cruise on to Road Town in Tortola, the largest of the British Virgin Islands (laze on beautiful beaches, visit rum distilleries, try sailing or amble around the city’s Botanic Gardens) and Philipsburg in St. Maarten, before venturing to the Dominican Republic’s buzzy capital of Santo Domingo.
