Quinta da Regaleira is a flamboyant 16th-century property near the historic centre of Sintra once owned by a rich (and eccentric) Brazilian mining owner and Freemason who let his imagination run riot when it came to expanding the neo-gothic estate. The Initiation Well is particularly famous, consisting of a spiral staircase descending to the base of the well where a Templar Cross is inscribed.
