The Acropolis in Athens is an ancient Greek complex built on a hill – the term acropolis means upper city. The most important monuments were built in the second half of the fifth century BC: the Parthenon, the Erechtheon, the Propylaea, the monumental entrance to the Acropolis, and the small temple Athena Nike. It is the most striking and complete ancient Greek site of its kind.
