Meteora is home to impressive rock formations, soaring more than 600m high up from the plains of Thessaly (the Greek word Meteora means “suspended in the air”), and formed one of the most important monastic communities in Greece. Today only six of these Byzantine monasteries perched on top of steep rocks are active. They house priceless artefacts and wall paintings.
